Call for school autonomy debate

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Scottish Education Secretary Mike mbt sale  Russell is expected to call for a full debate on moves to give schools more autonomy.

Delegates at an education conference in Edinburgh are likely to hear Mr Russell talk about the case for diversity in the way schools are run.

Schools in Scotland are directly controlled by MBT Shoes  their local councils.

Critics have claimed council control can sometimes be wooden and bureaucratic.

But supporters say it is a responsive and democratic system as councillors can be voted out of office if the public are unhappy Mbt shoes  with standards in schools.

East Lothian Council is looking at allowing schools to become semi-detached.

They would each be run by a trust, and head Mbt shoes  teachers would be allowed to make more decisions of their own.

Mr Russell is expected to say later on Tuesday that he backs councils giving schools more flexibility and control.

But he is also expected to make clear head discount Mbt shoes  teachers will still be subject to restrictions and will not, for example, be allowed to cherry pick which pupils they enrol.

Diabetes a ‘South Asian time-bomb’

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

A new diabetes centre in Birmingham is aiming to tackle the rising number of cases in the South Asian community.

One in four kidney dialysis Mbt

patients in the city are from the community, according to figures obtained by BBC Inside Out West Midlands.

Experts fear more young people will be diagnosed with the condition, linked to Western diet and minimal exercise.

Doctors say they fear the current Mbt shoes

epidemic could soon turn into a pandemic if nothing is done.

The average UK life expectancy for a white male is 81 years, but just 65 for a South Asian man, figures show.

The illness is a hormone disorder that can cause problems with the kidneys, legs and feet, eyes, heart, nerves, and blood flow.

If left untreated it can lead to kidney failure, amputation, blindness, or a stroke.

Type 2 diabetes is typically found in adults and is largely caused by obesity, but teenagers and children are now being diagnosed with it.

Some doctors blame genes, a high fat diet and a lack of exercise for the dramatically higher prevalence of the disease mbt sale

 among people from South Asia.

The new centre at Heartlands Hospital wants to be the “first prong” in aggressively treating this so-called health time-bomb.

Dr Wasim Hanif, from the South Asian MBT Shoe

Health Foundation and Heartlands Hospital, told Inside Out West Midlands the condition was moving through the community at an alarming rate.

‘No pleasure’

“What we are talking about today is an epidemic which can soon turn into a pandemic if we don’t do anything about it.

“If you’re a South Asian between the ages of 25 and 75, the prevalence of diabetes is now about 20%.

“This is compared to about 4% in the whole community so… the risk of having diabetes is at least five times greater.”

Diabetes sufferer Madhur Hussein, from discount Mbt shoes

Birmingham, has lost his feet and eyesight, had his hand amputated and suffered kidney failure since his diagnosis more than 20 years ago.

“I had a very good life before I had these problems… but as you see there’s no pleasure, no pleasure,” he said.

“You feel sorry for everything but there’s no life and [it is] especially a problem for all your family.

“You don’t feel it [diabetes]. It’s very slow poison.

“It’s not affecting you straight away. It will take a long time.

“You think, ‘it won’t affect me’, but it does.”

Professor Anthony Barnett, clinical director at Heartlands, said as more younger people in their 20s and 30s are being diagnosed with the condition, the issues “go to the heart of public health”.

“I think the food industry perhaps has not always been as receptive as it should be to helping with some of these,” he said.

He said the government should spend more money on health messages to help tackle the problem.

“This new diabetes centre and research facility is an incredibly important development within Birmingham and the surrounding area,” he added.

“The diabetes centre itself will be the first Mbt

prong of what we wish to achieve in really aggressively treating diabetes from the point of view of helping our patients reduce the risk of long-term complications.”

The Neighborhood Curling Team

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — From the house on 13th Street where John Shuster grew up, along Mbt

one edge of Chisholm, Minn., it was only a few blocks to where Jason Smith lived. And if you headed out of town a ways, out toward Biwabik, you would find the house of Jeff Isaacson.

Just like that, you would have most of what became the 2010 United States men’s Olympic curling team. There may be no team at the Vancouver Games any closer — quite literally.

For most of the past year, the MBT Shoe

three longtime friends and core members lived together in a two-bedroom Duluth apartment — with Shuster’s remarkably accommodating fiancée — in northern Minnesota.

“Jeff and I have bunk beds,” Smith said. And because you were going to ask, Smith sleeps on top.

If knowing your teammates ghd hair straighteners

well is a recipe for success, the Americans should be the best in the world. All five members of the team — four on the ice and one as an alternate — are from Minnesota. But the core is from one sliver north of Duluth. They were born within nine months of one another in 1982 and 1983.

“It would be pretty miserable to have to go curl with someone you didn’t like or you didn’t know very well,” Isaacson said.

That is no problem for this team. Shuster, Smith and Mbt shoes  Isaacson live together, curl together, travel together, sleep together. They spend about, oh, “97 percent” of their time together, Smith said.

“Sometimes, some person will go to the club a little earlier, somebody will follow behind a little after,” Smith said, referring to the local curling club. “That’s a little break, I guess.”

Their history reaches to about third grade, when Smith moved to Chisholm, a town of about 5,000 roughly 80 miles north of Duluth. After-school football games were usually in the big backyard of the Shuster house. Smith’s house became a hangout, too.

“I often times would ride my bike down the dirt road and go over to his house and hang out with ghd straighteners  him and his grandpa,” Shuster said.

Shuster was a grade ahead, but that never really matters in a small town. He and Smith went to the same schools and played in the same football, basketball and baseball leagues. And there was the Chisholm Curling Club.

Curling is where Isaacson came in. He and Smith became teammates in high school. Shuster ghd straighteners  and Isaacson later curled on teams together.

So when Shuster, part of the bronze-medal team for the Americans at the 2006 Turin Games in Italy, decided to put his own squad together as a skip, or captain, he mbt sale   did not have far to turn. He selected Smith and Isaacson. He added 21-year-old Chris Plys (who lives about a block away in Duluth), and 40-year-old John Benton (from St. Michael, outside of Minneapolis). The coach, Phill Drobnick, is from Eveleth, Minn., midway between Chisholm and Biwabik, as if to keep everything centered.

“You already have a chemistry,” Shuster said. “You don’t necessarily have to form it. So you know it’s going to work.”

Curling is the rare event (bobsled is another) in which teams qualify for the Winter Olympics as a fully formed squad, rather than being merely an assemblage of all-stars, as is the case for hockey, skiing, snowboarding, speedskating and most other sports.

(Playing as a team, members of this Olympic squad recently finished second in the Tuesday night league at the Duluth Curling Club. But Shuster’s squad was good enough to beat all comers at the Olympic trials last February.)

What makes the American team unusual, even in curling, is how tightly constructed it is. Want to know someone intimately? Live with him. Travel with him. Curl with him.

“It’s good for a while, then there will be some dishes left out, and then someone will have a blowup,” Isaacson said. “And then everyone will pick up their things again, and it’ll be fine for another couple days. Then there’ll be another blowup.”

Their personalities run the gamut. Isaacson is considered the quiet one; he is also a neat freak. Smith is the buoyant one with a bent toward hip-hop and video games; he also leaves clothes around. Shuster and his nonstop patter can be hysterical; he can also be a nag.

Last weekend in Vancouver, before the curling tournament began Tuesday, Smith and Plys (whose dark looks have attracted an unusual amount of news Ghd  media attention, considering, when you think about it, that he is an alternate on the curling team) were at Vancouver’s Cactus Club Café on Burrard Street.

Smith checked his cellphone. Shuster was sending silent, pointed urgings to return to the athletes’ village because there was an early-morning practice. Smith dismissed them for a bit with a shaking head. He finally relented.

“We better go,” he said to Plys.

Playing on an Olympic team with someone you have known since about age 10 cuts both ways.

Amy Williams holds her nerve to win gold for Britain in bob skeleton

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Great Britain joined the medals table at the Winter Olympics in emphatic style early this morning when Amy Williams won gold in the skeleton.

Williams, a 27-year-old from Cambridge, dominated Mbt shoes

the event from the start. In her four runs on the Whistler ice track, she managed to break the course record and then break it again. By her fourth run, the gold was hers to lose. Among the athletes left in her wake was Shelley Rudman, the Briton who won silver in the Turin Olympics four years ago.

Rudman was the higher profile athlete on discount Mbt shoes

arrival in Whistler, but Williams leaves as Britain’s ninth gold medal-winner in Winter Olympics history. The last were the women’s curling team in Salt Lake City and before that came Torvill and Dean. Williams is the first individual gold medal-winner since Robin Cousins in Lake Placid in 1980.

“I started afresh today and really enjoyed it,” she Mbt  said. And that was after her third run, a sense of triumph that was nothing compared with the delirium after the fourth.

Her gold medal is also a resounding statement for successful planning within British sport. UK Sport recognised skeleton as a horse worth backing and of the £5.8 million invested in winter sports in the four-year build-up to these Games, £2.1 million alone went to skeleton.

Williams has never won a race on the skeleton World mbt sale  Cup series but the Whistler track is clearly to her liking because her best finish, second, came here last year. What is not to the liking of her competitors, though, was her hi-tech, aerodynamic helmet. On Thursday, after the first two runs, the United States team launched an official protest, arguing that the design of the helmet contravened federation rules. The Bobsleigh Federation rejected the objection.

There was speculation that a further protest would be  Mbt launched after the final run. By nightfall in Whistler, though, Williams remained firmly the gold medal-winner.

BBC summer schedule: Ascot and opera for Mark Thompson

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

For the millions who huddled Mbt shoes

round their television sets as the drizzle fell, the summer fixtures of 2009 were disappointingly damp. But for the Director-General of the BBC, they marked a hectic season of socialising.

Mark Thompson was wined and dined on days out with his family that included rubbing shoulders with royalty at Ascot, as well as visits to Glyndebourne, Wimbledon and the Chelsea Flower Show, the BBC revealed yesterday. Details of the social season of Mr Thompson, whose pay-packet costs licence fee payers £834,000, were disclosed as the corporation published its executive gifts and hospitality register for the first time. It also disclosed that it pays £229 million to presenters, and discount Mbt shoes

that senior managers’ expenses rose by eight per cent over the summer.

Mr Thompson and his wife, Jane Blumberg, an academic, completed a whirlwind tour of events where they were guests of the bank Credit Suisse at the Chelsea Flower Show in May, before attending a reception at the Museum of Modern Art in their home town of Oxford.

The pair joined the Queen in the Mbt

royal box at Ascot the following month, before Ms Blumberg stepped down from attendant duties for the next event, the British Grand Prix, five days later. The Director-General instead took his 18-year-old son, as guests of Formula One. The season ended with a whirlwind weekend in early July, as Mr Thompson and his wife visited the opera festival at Glyndebourne — which cannot be watched by those who pay the £142.50 licence fee as the rights are held by Sky — before taking in the ladies’ tennis final at Wimbledon next day.

A BBC spokesman said: “In his capacity as Director-General Mark Thompson was invited as a guest to six events which the BBC  mbt sale

 covered across its services.”

The disclosures came as the BBC released further information that it claimed put it at the forefront of openness for public bodies. The corporation has long resisted calls to name the exact price it pays stars such as Jonathan Ross and Graham Norton, but yesterday it took tentative steps forward, conceding that £54 million is paid each year to those on contracts worth £150,000 or more.

Caroline Thomson, the chief operating officer, said: “The BBC engages some of the greatest performers in the world across television Mbt

and radio, and also nurtures and develops people that will be at the heart of our programmes in the future.

“They add to the credibility, expertise and creativity of the BBC,” she added. The corporation, which has undergone a programme of slashing the pay of top presenters by 25 per cent, promised to make further cuts, and said it would update the pay figures annually.

However, it faced embarrassment in its second scheduled release of executives’ expenses, as it emerged that the amount claimed by its top 107 staff for the July to September quarter was £188,000 — up from £175,000 in the previous three months.

The rise was caused by increased spending on flights and hotels, which the corporation said was because of a seasonal rise in the number of conferences and overseas events.

Spending on hospitality and taxis was down, after executives were stung by claims from the first round of disclosures that included managers charging the licence fee payer for champagne for Bruce Forsyth, as well as gifts of luxury toiletries and cashmere socks.

This time round there were far fewer eye-catching claims, but Erik Huggers, the BBC’s director of future media and technology who Mbt

is paid £274,000, spent nearly £5,000 on taxis in three months.

The corporation resisted other calls for transparency, however. In December Gordon Brown called on all public bodies, including the BBC, to name staff who were paid more than £150,000 of public money. The BBC yesterday refused Freedom of Information Act requests for the information.

Dannii Minogue privacy complaint upheld

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The press watchdog has upheld two complaints from X Factor judge Dannii Minogue against the Daily Mirror and Daily Record over invasion of privacy.

The singer complained when the mbt sale papers reported she was pregnant before her 12-week scan, which can establish the health of an unborn baby.

The Press Complaints Commission (PCC) said the articles were a “regrettable lapse in editorial judgement”.

Both newspapers will have to publish  ghd hair straighteners  the PCC’s full adjudication.

The Daily Mirror and Daily Record had argued that publication was justified on the grounds that information about the pregnancy had appeared on the Sydney Morning Herald website and a blog the day before.

The newspapers said this made  Ghd   the information available to the public and it had therefore ceased to be private.

However, the PCC rejected the argument saying any previous references had been speculative and not confirmed as fact.

The press code regarding privacy concerning health matters states: “As a matter of common sense newspapers and magazines Mbt  should not reveal news of an individual’s pregnancy without consent before the 12-week scan, unless the information is known to such an extent that it would be perverse not to refer to it.”

The PCC has previously upheld complaints from singer Charlotte Church and actress Joanna Riding about articles which also MBT Shoe referred to the early stages of pregnancy.

Minogue confirmed she was expecting a baby with her boyfriend, Kris Smith, last month.

The Met Office said Mbt  temperatures will drop to -6C (21F) in some parts of the country, with biting north easterly winds adding to the chill.

Fears were growing last night that grit supplies had not been replenished since the cold snap in January, raising the prospect of further misery for motorists on Britain’s roads.

The coldest weather will take ghd hair straighteners hold between Wednesday and Friday, with up to four inches of snow across the eastern part of Scotland, England and south east England.

Snow is also expected to fall in London, Mbt settling especially on higher ground, while the north west of the country will by gripped by severe frosts.

Andrew Sibley, a Met Office forecaster, said: “It will feel very cold later in the week because of that brisk north easterly wind. The cold winter is still continuing.”

Western parts of the UK will bear the brunt of the  ghd hair straighteners second cold snap because of limited cloud cover, with temperatures falling as low as -6C (21F) overnight. Eastern parts of the country will experience temperatures as low as -3C (27F), the Met Office said.

Britain was plunged into chaos last month  discount Mbt shoes when up to eight inches of snow fell across the country, causing treacherous conditions on the roads and closing thousands of schools. Rail and air travellers were plagued by delays as compact ice made tracks and runways unpassable.

Rock salt supplies also ran critically low, leaving councils unable to grit the roads.

The Welsh  Mbt Local Government Association warned at the weekend that local councils across the UK had failed to stock up on enough grit since the January cold snap to withstand another bout of freezing weather.

Steve Thomas, chief executive, said: “We are not just talking about Wales here but the whole of the UK.”

Mr Sibley said the temperature would begin to drop on Monday as the north easterly airstream becomes the dominant force.

“The temperatures will drop and there is a risk of light flurries of snow in the south east as the brisk north east winds develop,” he said.

Blog:Roman Bednar back onside as goal shows West Brom only way is up

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Having finished last season with a club suspension for drug possession, Roman Bednar’s goalscoring form could be leading to a much happier conclusion to this discount Mbt shoes campaign.

The Czech Republic forward took his tally to five in the past six matches last night as West Bromwich Albion, who have signed Giles Barnes, the former Derby County midfield player, on an 18-month contract, returned to the automatic promotion places.

“I’m pleased with the way we got the win ghd hair straighteners,” Roberto Di Matteo, the manager, said. “We’ve spent most of our season there so it’s good to keep the pressure on Newcastle and Forest.”

Only Barnsley and Ipswich Town had won here in the Coca-Cola Championship this season and Blackpool were rewarded for a bright start when Danny Coid teed up Keith Southern to beat Scott Carson with a low shot in the 25th minute.

West Brom were level within four minutes. Chris Brunt breached Blackpool’s high defensive line and, after an exchange of quick passes, slid the Mbt ball to Bednar, who waited for Paul Rachubka, the Blackpool goalkeeper, to go to ground before finishing calmly.

Five minutes before half-time, a raking pass from Brunt sent Gonzalo Jara scampering clear and the Chile right back’s cross presented Bednar with a tap-in at the far post.

Andy Butler, a Blackpool substitute, headed against his own post from another Brunt cross just after the restart and DJ Campbell struck the crossbar — at the right end — before Dobbie pulled ghd straighteners Blackpool level with a low shot ten minutes from time.

But after Butler was penalised for a trip on Ishmael Miller in the 83rd minute, Graham Dorrans scored from the penalty spot to seal victory for the visiting team.

“I’m delighted that we showed the character we did,” Ian Holloway, the Blackpool manager, said. “It was a big test for us to see how far we are off from the big boys in this Mbt shoes division and we weren’t that far.”

Blog:Avram Grant believed he would have cash to spend at Portsmouth

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Avram Grant, the Portsmouth manager, has hit out at the broken promises that have left his side staring relegation from the Barclays Premier League in the discount Mbt shoes face.

The Israeli took over as manager when Paul Hart was sacked in November and was led to believe that he would be in a position to add four players to his side last month.

But with the club struggling to pay their players for the fourth time this season, and needing to sell Younès Kaboul and Asmir Begovic to balance the books, Portsmouth have only been able to recruit Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, the striker.

The Kaboul and Begovic deals were negotiated behind the backs of Grant and Peter Storrie, the chief executive, prompting both men to consider leaving Fratton Park. Both opted to stay, but Grant admits that the failure of Ali al-Faraj, the owner, to deliver new blood during the transfer window has hurt their hopes of survival.

Grant, whose side play Fulham at Craven Cottage tonight, said: “I’m not a quitter and I’m not afraid of problems — for me a problem is a big challenge and I came here with a big MBT Shoes challenge. But I’m very, very disappointed with the situation off the pitch and I’m very disappointed that people cannot do what they promised me.

“When I came to the team, I knew the situation was not good with the football side, but they promised me everything was good with the financial side and that we would bring four players more. So we made a lot of progress on the football side. We showed a lot of character and were thinking about the next step — to stay in the league.

“We needed to bring in players so that the squad could be good, especially as we had a lot of injuries in the team. There was a lot of pressure on a very short squad and we didn’t have time to let players who were coming back from injury ease their way back into the squad. We’ve had injuries, as we thought we would have ghd hair straighteners, and instead of bringing in two players, we sold two players. I’m very disappointed.”

While Storrie said last week that he and Grant had every reason to consider their positions, the Portsmouth manager has concerns other than his own future.

“I’m trying not to think about myself now, especially when we have a game,” he said. “I’m trying to think about the club because I don’t think that I’m the main issue.

“The main issue is Portsmouth Football Club and the fans. I’m trying to think what is best for them. Of course, I don’t feel we did the best for them off the pitch. But on the Mbt shoes pitch, we are always trying to do the best.”

Blog:Manchester City frustrated as McDonald Mariga joins Inter Milan

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Manchester City’s delight at signing Adam Johnson, the England Under-21 winger, from Middlesbrough on Monday night was tempered by the collapse of a bid to buy Mbt McDonald Mariga from Parma.

City had agreed a £7 million fee last week with the Italian club for Mariga, the Kenya midfield player, but despite spending three days preparing their case for a work permit, the Premier League club’s appeal was rejected in less than ten minutes at a hearing in London yesterday, much to their discount Mbt shoes dismay.

Mariga had also been tracked throughout the transfer window by José Mourinho, the Inter Milan coach, and, with the City deal dead in the water, the Italian club moved swiftly to sign the player.

City had also hoped to sign Fernando Gago, the Real Madrid midfield player, but the Spanish club refused to allow him to join on loan until the end of the season, even though ghd straighteners City had promised to sign him permanently for €17 million (about £14.8 million) in the summer.

As revealed by The Times this month, City were also keen to sign Jérôme Boateng, the highly rated Hamburg defender, but did not submit a formal bid after it became clear that he had no intention of leaving the German club in January.

Johnson has signed a 4½-year contract with City after Middlesbrough accepted defeat in their effort to keep the player. It is understood that City will pay the Coca-Championship club an initial £6.5 million, with the fee potentially rising to £8 million. Middlesbrough had initially turned down what they deemed to be two “derisory” offers from City, but Roberto Mancini’s eagerness to sign a player MBT Shoes who has also been championed by Brian Kidd, the Italian’s assistant, eventually paid off.

“He is a very good player with fantastic potential and, as a club, we are always keen to sign British talent,” Mancini said.

As Johnson hurtled across the Pennines on Monday for a medical, the repercussions of his move to City were felt elsewhere. Sunderland made a last-ditch attempt to resurrect their bid for Benjani Mwaruwari, the City striker, which had collapsed last weekend over personal terms and medical issues. Sunderland officials were trying to establish on Monday night whether the paperwork had been dispatched to the Premier League in time.

Middlesbrough used the proceeds from Johnson to sign Scott McDonald for £3.5 million, the Australia striker becoming the fifth Celtic player to arrive on ghd hair straighteners Teesside in a month. Lee Miller also joined from Aberdeen for £500,000.
